What Is Intumescent Paint?
Intumescent paint is a specialist passive fire protection coating applied directly to structural steel. Under normal conditions it appears as a smooth decorative paint finish. However, when exposed to the extreme temperatures of a fire, the coating undergoes a chemical reaction and rapidly expands to form a thick insulating char layer.
This protective layer significantly slows the transfer of heat into the steel, helping to preserve its structural integrity and load-bearing capacity. By delaying the temperature rise of the steelwork, intumescent coatings provide valuable time for safe evacuation, emergency response and firefighting operations.
